My Baby’s Breathing Monitor Just Sounded The Alarm?
03/07/09
I panicked and jolted him and he took a deep breath and now he is sleeping.
Could he have stopped breathing?
How long can a baby not take a breath for?
Is this usual?
I am scared to go to sleep now.
He has a cold as well.
Does anyone have any info on this Please !

It was not a SIDS episode, there is no such thing as almost SIDS.
These monitors are not extremely reliable and on occasions sound off when the baby’s’ breathing is not that deep or strong.
Is there a chance your baby could have sleep apnea? If his breathing is noisy and he makes hard breaths (when not having a cold) or on occasions stops breathing for a few seconds, has problems breathing, he might have apnea. Talk to your doctor about that.
I also have a 6 month old and she falls asleep with me laying next to her. On numerous occasions I have noticed that when she goes into a deep sleep she would stop breathing and that really freaks me out. If I leave her alone she takes a really deep breath after few seconds, if I think that it’s been too long I poke her and she make a really deep breath and then continues to sleep as usual. It really freaks me out. I told our ped about that and she said that it’s completely normal and that many babies do that in their sleep, that adults do that too. It still worries me when she sleeps and I often go to check on her but there is nothing else that can be done, that’s just the way they breath sometimes.
Suction his nose often and use saline drops to help him breath easier through his cold. You can even rub a small amount of wicks vapor rub on his chest see if that helps.
Why is he on a breathing monitor? I had a baby who had a SIDS episode so she was on a monitor and she was a really slow breather so her monitor would go off all the time. The doc had to adjust the settings. If yours is just a commercial store bought one though, those are not as reliable and certainly not needed without a doctors say so.
He is probably just a little too bunged up with his cold. Have you propped the head end of his cot up with books? You might find that will help his breathing- they don’t like to lie flat with colds.
My cousin likes to stop breathing for no reason, she will be two later this year, and she scares her mum terribly, but normally they can be reminded to breathe again by a jolt like you have described, or dipping their feet in cold water- it shocks them back to normal rhythm.
He could have stopped breathing, but unless it happens again, relax.
Good luck to you and your little one xx
Best wishes for his speedy recovery
Call the doctor…
My son is also 6 months and he is also sick with a cold…and I have the baby monitor practically in his face because I want to hear him breathing…and I have noticed that when he’s sick his breathing does tend to be slow and slightly labored.
I have the mattress elevated to assist in drainage of his sinuses, that really seems to help…
I also have a cool mist humidifier (doctor recommended) and
I have also noticed that if you put a space heater or the regular house heater (whatever you’re more comfortable with)in the nursery…Warm air seems to be easier for him to breath. The second we come out of the nursery into the cooler air of the house…his nose starts running and he starts getting all plugged up again…
Those breathing alarms are sometimes more scary than helpful…you can call the doctor if it makes you more comfortable…but if you make the baby more comfortable (with the tips above) …he’ll breath alot easier and will less likely set off that alarm.
Good Luck!
I was thinking of getting one of those. I asked on here how they work. Some people said they loved them. Some people said that there was so many false alarms it wasn’t worth the anxeity it caused when it went off. Not to sure if I’ll buy one or not now
you should get advice from a nurse or doctor. If the monitor went off its likely he did, since thats what its for. infants breath rate is 2 to 44 breaths per minute. which doesnt help much. get some professional advice.
