baby walkers?
the paper that the pediatrician gave us said to avoid buying a walker because they can be dangerous. My MIL bought my daughter a walker..should I return it? my MIL is one of those who knows everything..so if I told her I wanted to return it because they are dangerous she would probably say NO THERE NOT, BOTH MY KIDS USED THEM AND THEIR JUST FINE..
I just dont want to take the chance with it and have my daughter get hurt. Maybe I should just return it w/o a receipt and not tell her..she probably wouldnt say anything about it but just vent to my husband. i dont know
any input would be appreciated
thanks in advance ![]()
thanks I wasnt quite sure why they were dangerous..I would keep an eye on her, if I did allow her to use it

They are only dangerous if you let them be. My son is in a walker when I do things around the house. He follows me around like a little duckling. Before I let him at it, I didn a thorough walkthrough with him around the house to locate potential problems.
Our pediatrician told us walkers are bad because they put babies in the walking position before they are ready. Their muscles arent ready to be standing and walking yet. SHe said it is like going straight to running a marathon without training for it first.
i have never seen a child get hurt by the use of a walker, however i have been told by the pediatrician that walkers cause the child to use different leg muscles than when actually walking independently. i bought my daughter a walker and had to return it because she was too short for it and by the time she would be tall enough to use it she could be walking on her own anyways.
do what you think is best, you could return it and get one of those little buggy type of walkers that the child has to hold onto and push
I just bought my 6 month old daughter a walker and she is having a blast! The walkers are only dangerous if their are things your baby can get into/reach when they are moving around the room. Make sure you keep an eye on her and put a gate up if you have any stairs.
Unfortunately, from personal experience with returning a baby monitor my MIL gave us, I Would NOT Return It!! LOL
She was very hurt and didn’t understand why we would take back her gift (rolls eyes)
But honestly, if you keep a watch out, she will be just fine! Good luck!
Baby walkers are un safe because some parents don’t watch there baby when they are in the walker and they just let the baby roam around the house. And there fore the baby could get hurt by falling over in the walker. or falling down stairs and so on. If you watch your child very very good and walk with them where ever they go in the walker. It should be fine.
my sons doctor gave us the same paper…and at first we didnt let him use the walker… now he is 9 months and he loves it…he follows me through the house…i would just keep it…she will have fun in it…it gives her freedom to move…and help to let her walk…good luck…
i wish we would have let him use it sooner…
I would just keep it.
My borther had one, and he was perfectly fine, it also taught him to walk .
You know what, you should be honest with your mother-in-law. Simply tell her your pediatrician was against using one and you feel you want to take his/her advice.
You have to be comfortable enough as a parent to protect your child in whatever way you deem necessary. Walkers don’t help a child learn to walk – in fact they can delay it because the child depends on the walker and doesn’t follow the natural progression to stepping out on their own as quickly. And a child in a walker can get out of sight and into danger in the wink of an eye. Hospitals saw so many accidents related to these things that most pediatricians and baby nurses hate them,
Follow your instincts and if it puts your MIL’s nose out of joint, she’ll get over it. Your daughter will bring her around…
I feel they are only unsafe if left in them too long or left in them unattended. Any item that allows your child to be mobile can be labled unsafe if they are left unattended. My 5 1/2 month old loves his walker as it allows him to be mobile and explore! Of course Mommy is right there with him and pointing things out to him and telling him what things are called. We use it as a learning experience and a fun time.
